Engraving & Trade-In value

FYI for those considering engraving.

I sent my 10..5 inch iPad Pro for a trade in with a quote of $280 from Apple.

It is imperfect condition with one exception: my name was engraved on it by Apple.

The offer was reduced to $55 so I declined and will keep it.

Don’t get your devices engraved when you buy if you may be trading it it eventually.

Engraving any consumer product will degrade its trade in value. The company buying your device for resale cannot sell it for as much as an un-engraved device so they in turn offer you less for it.

Apple partners with an independent buyer for the trade ins. That buyer determines the final value only upon inspection of the actual device since they have to factor in their profit margin (they are a for profit re-buyer of used devices). You’d get the same response from Gazelle-dot-com, or Amazon buy back or any other for profit buyer of used devices.

Unless your name itself has value as a celebrity or something, nobody will pay as much for a personalized device over one that is not. Because they in turn cannot resell it for as much as a non-personalized device.
