You're not likely to contract a virus if you don't download from dubious sites, and Macs have quite strong protection. You certainly don't need any of the usual anti-virus apps, which can do more harm than good.

What is generally recommended is Malwarebytes, which in the free mode can run checks on your Mac for Malware: it comes with a 14-day trial of the more powerful paid-for version but then reverts to the more limited but still useful free version. Unlike some of the other anti-virus programs it won't do any damage.
