I want to rephrase my question: According to material I read on Thunderbolt 3, 40 Gbps speeds are possible with a passive cable only if the cable does not exceed .5 meter in length. Anything longer requires the cable to be active. Apple's cable is .8 meter long and supposedly can support 40 Gbps speed and 100-watt charging. Apple's .8 meter cable connectors seem smaller than on most active Thunderbolt cables so it appears the .8 meter cable is passive. How then can Apple's .8 meter Thunderbolt cable be both passive and support 40 Gbps speeds as well as 100-watt charging? A previous "answer" from three years ago does not seem conclusive but speculative. I seek a definitive answer.
