How can I STOP Thunderbird for OSX from being default mailer?

I'm migrating back to Mail from a bad T'bird experience, but the "default email reader" in Mail /prefs/general keeps flipping back to Thunderbird each time I set it to "Mail". And I can't see a way to remove it from the selection w/o uninstalling T'bird. Not ready to do that yet, and should be able to have both launchable with Mail as default.

T'bird prefs/help says a lot about MAKING T'bird the default but nothing about stopping it from launching.

Any help ?

How to change your default email app

  1. Make sure that the other email app is installed. Although you might be able to use a web browser for email (webmail), a web browser isn't an email app.
  2. Open the Mail app.
  3. Choose Mail > Preferences, then click General.
  4. Choose an email app from the ”Default email reader” menu.

You might be prompted to add an email account before you can change the setting in Mail. If you don't want to do that, check the preferences of the other email app. You might be able to set a default email app from there.

Way ahead of you.

" . . . . the "default email reader" in Mail /prefs/general keeps flipping

back to Thunderbird each time I set it to "Mail". . . . "

My orig. query noted the inability to change what you suggest.

I'm just trying to edit the available mailers in "Mail" pref's "Def. Em. Rdr"

list to not even show T'bird or, failing that, how to delete the whole

Thunderbird Pref file. I'm not ready yet to permanently trash the T'bird

application, but can't seem to get T'bird from launching on mailto: clicks.

Is there an OSX system fix for this?

(to take the indiv. apps out of the picture)

Also, T'bird prefs grey out the change. See below.
