upgrade the OS in a MacBook Air?
For a MBA Early 2014 w/8GB RAM, where do I start if I want to upgrade the OS, currently running High Sierra? I have done it in years past, but it's been awhile.

Another option to try from How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support if you hadn't noticed it:
I'm sure that link will pay off eventually, so thanks. Right now, for whatever reason, my MBA's OS is telling me that it can't be upgraded. That makes no sense, so I will need to research the issue. It started out telling me that the existing installer for Mojave was damaged and couldn't be used. That was before I even thought about upgrading the OS, but now I'm being told that I can't upgrade any apps or the OS. It's just a MacBook Air, not a Heavily Modified MacBook Air, with 8GB RAM and a 500GB SSD, of which 66GB are in use. It should be willing and able to accept an OS upgrade. Thanks for the link. I hope to need it.
