No Sound on a iMac

Got a new iMac up and running with no sounds at all. - downloaded all updates and the sound worked for a day! then stopped, checked everything and I mean everything - even tried tech support - what a joke - they don't work at weekends - still nothing - Apple this is a pile of crap!
