USB-C to HDMI adapter is fine but iMac 21" won't display anything?

I have a third-party Thunderbolt/USB-C to HDMI adapter that I tested with my Samsung to my Smart TV and it works fine. However, when I try to connect my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019 OSX 10.14.6) with my Macbook Pro (mid-2015), Macbook Air (2014) and IBM Thinkpad, it won't detect at all.

I've tried to plug it off and back in while it's on, it doesn't do anything. I've tried to clear the NVRAM/PRAM still doesn't change anything.

Help?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.14

The 2019 iMac can use an external tv or display, but it does not support being used as a display.
