i am helping a friend who is having trouble hearing callers voice on her iPhone SE unless the caller is on speaker at which time the volume is fine. what troubleshooting can we do and or what is the likely problem?

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. my friend and I are in different cities so it's a bit difficult. Also it is her first iPhone at the sweet age of 85, so trouble shooting is a bit challenging.
With regard to the article-- i have not yet tried opening the settings or cleaning the speaker. oddly though when the calleris on speaker the volume is adequate. when not on speaker however, it is very difficult to hear the callers voice because the 'output volume' is so low, despite the fact that the volume toggle on the side is turned up al the way up.
would welcome any further suggestions,

She should also update her carrier settings as well: Manually update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad
