Migration Assistant authentication failed

Trying to move data to new mac, but have error with migration assistant

We understand you're trying to move data from your previous computer to a new one with Migration Assistant, but it's unable to authenticate. We're happy to help.


Before you begin with migration, make sure both computers are currently up to date.

Move your content to a new Mac


If you're getting an authentication error, this it typically password related. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, and click the padlock icon at the bottom left. Enter your system password and see if it is accepted. If it is, go back into Migration Assistant and attempt the migration again.


If you still get the error, you can also try changing your system password with these steps: Change the login password on Mac


Once the password has been changed, go back into Migration Assistant and attempt the migration again.


If the migration is still unable to authenticate, we'd recommend contacting Apple for assistance: Get Support
