Since joining Apple Music and turning on sync so that all my existing music appears across all devices, all my existing playlists suddenly appear in triplicate in the music app. Every single playlist, and these are ones I have had for many years. Have no idea why this happened, but hoping someone has some advice about how to fix this.

What to Reset Does:
This is likely happening because of all the Caches in your system are keeping settings as they are. Resetting them is what is needed. And that’s what a format and then restoration does.
Right, but it shouldn't happen in the first place. While I appreciate your help, erasing my entire Mac is a sledgehammer to walnut approach. If it is cache, then surely there is a way to simple erase that cache. Or would a Time Machine restore of the Music app fix it? I'm not sure where the info about playlists are held.

This is for finding duplicate media. That's not what I have. I have duplicates of the playlists only.
Erase my whole Mac because of duplicate playlists since joining Apple Music? 😲 Not going to do that. Looking for why this has happened and how to fix it, not wipe and reinstall my entire Mac.
