How to tell a fake iPad?
I want to find out if an iPad a friend got as gift is not a fake. No serial number. But I have a photo and it doesn't even look like a real iPad. It's design is different. Can I post a photo of it?

I cannot tell anything with that third party case on it.
There are all sorts of cases for iPads.
The case needs to come off before anyone here can make an honest evaluation of this tablet.
Even for me to determine this.
Take the case off and send another image in a new reply post.
Take images of the front and back of this tablet and then power up the tablet and take an image of the tablet’ s main Home screen.
I think that white part IS part of the case and NOT the tablet itself!
I think that both the blue bits and white raised surface is part of the entire case for that tablet!
Keeping the screen ultra protected.
All of that needs to come off!
Until all of that comes off, there is no way to tell anything.
I believe that tablet is locked into some sort of rugged, child proof case that needs to be removed in its entirety.
Then send some more images in another reply.
That tablet is being covered up by a full body case.
What shows onscreen when it is powered up.
If setup correctly, when powered up should show a multi-language startup screen or a graphic of a cable that states connect to iTunes or something very similar.
I am not an idiot.
I can certainly tell a fake iPad from the real one, but NOT with a full coverage case covering the entire tablet!

Finding, then Using Serial Number:
Using the Serial Number, see if this is an official Apple Device...

Look on the Original Box:
Did this come with the original box? If so, then that would have the Serial Number on it.
This is one of the photos my friend sent me. The blue corner guards are also weird. Apparently purchased to protect the device. Nothing about this item is of iPad design. The surface isn't even flat to begin!
But that's the problem. The minimal case coverage doesn't really hide the design fakery. iPads have a flat "glass" surface. Not indented as you can plainly see here. I think I need to send it to Apple. Or better take it to the 5th Avenue store here in Manhattan..
Thank you anyway!
Sorry. I don't mean to offend. But I'm not an idiot either.
The "case" is minimal, covering only the corners. It does not hide the fact that the device does not have a completely flat surface. The face of the device is what I'm comparing to a real iPad.
It sure looks like that raised white surface should come off.
The Home TouchID button and side front camera are completely exposed around that raised up area.
I am betting that white area comes off.
It looks like it is locked into those blue areas of the case.
It's all a cover. That answers my question.
Yes, you can post a photo/image of the tablet in question.
I'll take the photo into the Apple store on 5th. Thank you.
My friend can't find the serial number on the device.
Oh. you think beside the blue bumpers there's a full cover too. Yikes! I'll ask if he thinks it will come off along with the blue bumpers. Thanks.
If that entire case comes off, if an iPad, the “A” model number can be found on the aluminium back of that iPad, in small print, right under the larger bold print “iPad”.
