Apps and associated passwords

I currently have a bunch of apps which do not have a suggested username or password which means I have to search through a long list of usernames and passwords.

is there a way of creating a link between an app and a suggested password from the password list which I can manage? If I use the web based version of some of these accounts, it’ll automatically suggest one because it recognises the URL and has already created a link. But it’s super frustrating when my phone doesn’t realise that I use the same username and password when using that app.

You’ve completely misunderstood what I’ve said. There are some apps where it doesn’t suggest your password. It gives you the option to choose a password from your list but doesn’t suggest one from your keychain as you would expect it to. Therefore, you have to make loads of unnecessary key presses to select something which it would know if you used the web based version of the app.

here’s an example.

if I go to a webpage and press the username field, it usually pops up with the password that I have saved in my keychain and there requires 1 quick press. Simple right?

if I go to the same company’s official app, in some cases, keychain doesn’t know which login details to use so the process goes a little like this:

  1. open app
  2. select username field
  3. Press passwords (with the key symbol)
  4. Press the search field
  5. Start typing name of company
  6. select password

6 steps which feels like it takes forever! And that’s assuming you’ve typed the name correctly and not misspelled it because you’re in a hurry and you’re already frustrated!

Surely there must be a way to go into Keychain and create a Password-to-app association therefore creating the same slick process you enjoy when using the web based version.

in keychain you can manually create exactly what I’m talking about for websites.

Settings>>Paswords>>Plus Button top right.

there should be one of these for our apps because sometimes Keychain doesn’t know which password you need so you have to scroll unnecessarily through your list.

In the picture below you should have a selectable fields. Instead of Website, it would drop down and two options would offer website or app. If “App” is selected, it’ll bring up a list of your Apps and the ability to then type in the password and link the two together or select the app/password combo in the keychain and create an “association”.

you could liken it to File Associations for an operating system which told documents which tells the computer which programme to run when you double click the file.

Im suggesting that a function is created by Apple to retrospectively offer the ability to select an app (by identifying the origins of the app or something else) and then telling the function that there is a relationship between the two and adding that to my Keychain.

Feedback for Apple goes here >>> http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

Please explain why this can’t be done and I’ll shut the **** up

Nobody here can know why your app developer did not provide this functionality.

the same developer and the same organisation have utilised this function with their other App.

And what did they say when you asked them about this other app?

All you want to do is blame someone else.

Ironic no?

Yet again, you’re not understanding what I’m describing and I know I’m describing it clearly.

let’s say you already have an account set up which has a username and password. You then go to the App Store and download the app. When you click the username field, you have the option to press password and manually scroll or type the name of the App. Right? You with me so far? It doesn’t always recognise the fact that the app belongs to that URL. Also, there is no option to set up a strong password because you already have an account username and password.

I’m asking if there is a way to retrospectively select an App and then tell your iPhone that when you use that App, that the username and password you select should be used when logging in to that App.

allow me to give you yet another clear description using a real life scenario because you’re either not able to understand or you’re being deliberately obstinate.

I created an account with EToro in 2016, downloaded the EToro app and when logging in, I was given the option to save the Password and Username to my keychain and have been able to use the 1 step process ever since. Nice and easy and how it should always be.

a year ago, I decided to download a second EToro app for a different part of their account which has access to extra things. There is no way to use all of their functions in one App before you suggest doing it all in one place.

when I use the original main EToro app, my phone knows which username and password is linked to that app and suggests that I use it to log in. It’s nice and slick and requires 1 click.

when I use the other EToro app, I press the username field and it gives me the option to select a password. It doesn’t know that I use the same username and password as the main app, which means I have to go through a painful process to find my stored username and password which is unnecessary.

I want to be able to select an App and then tell the App which username and password I want linked to it.

why is this so hard to understand? There is no option to retrospectively select an App and then tell that app which username and password I want linked to that App.

If this doesn’t exist, surely this is something that could be explored? Or am I actually being a complete idiot?

as you can see from the attached screen shot, there is no option to select the username and password that is already in my keychain and the “solution” you’ve described doesn’t exist because I’ve tried!

I did not mean to be patronizing, I was being factual. The TEXT labels of those fields are for your edification, iOS doesn’t read the text label. They are not the tags in the code that creates those fields and that iOS uses to identify username and password fields. The fact that other apps work correctly means that programmers of those apps had defined those fields in the code as username and password fields. It’s very sloppy coding on the part of the developer. It’s also possible that the app provider thinks that automatically filling in a password is a security weakness; in other words, it is intentionally designed so a password vault can’t fill in the password automatically.

Jun 10, 2021 5:47 PM in response to Lawrence Finch

Fine. I accept that there is a possibility that the developers may have either been sloppy or they may have deliberately not enabled the app for security reasons.

However, there are a couple of flaws in this argument.

  1. The same company have issued two apps which both access the same account credentials so I believe it’s highly improbable that they were sloppy.
  2. The same company have issued two apps which both access the same account credentials and therefore they don’t have an issue with security weakness because they would have done the same on both.
  3. So what if they have forgotten, been sloppy or deliberately not coded it, why is there not an option within Apples OS to create a relationship between an App and a password which already exists in my key chain when the Apple OS knows a password is required and therefore suggests I refer to my Keychain.

Im suggesting that a function is created by Apple to retrospectively offer the ability to select an app (by identifying the origins of the app or something else) and then telling the function that there is a relationship between the two and adding that to my Keychain.

Please explain why this can’t be done and I’ll shut the **** up. My Apple OS knows a password is needed. We know that because it asks if I’d like to go to my Keychain completely unprompted by me. We know that the Credentials exist in my Keychain and we know that they work because the same developer and the same organisation have utilised this function with their other App.

What is so wrong with my suggestion? Rather than replying with an ambiguous reason why this might be happening, why don’t you ask the question “can we do something about it?”.

Seriously people, no one has looked at this problem and thought that there might be something we can do. All you want to do is blame someone else.

Jun 10, 2021 5:20 PM in response to Lawrence Finch

Oh thanks for the patronising response Lawrence. So how do you explain this screen shot then? My phone knows a username is required because it’s saying password and offering me the option to go and painstakingly find said password. So my friend, I think you might be wrong. If what you’re saying is true, it wouldn’t even offer me the option to go to my Key chain. Or am I wrong?

Here is a screen shot of an app which has clearly told my phone that a username and password is required. It asks me if I’d like to go to my saved passwords. But it doesn’t know which one hence the fact that it hasn’t suggested the specific Username and Password for this app and subsequent account. If you want to blame the “developers” how do you explain this?

Jun 10, 2021 1:22 PM in response to LucasHernandez

LucasHernandez,

Thank you for further clarifying. We do understand that you need to go through multiple steps to locate the password within an app, when you're looking for it to autofill. Using the guide we previously provided, it says "To later allow iPhone to automatically fill in the password for you, tap Yes when you’re asked if you want to save the password." regarding websites and apps. That can be found under the section titled "Create a strong password for a new account".

After locating the password that you want to use, do you see the option to save the password as mentioned? If not, if you manually type the information are you then prompted to save the password for it to auto fill later?

Keep us posted.

Regards.

I have provided a rational explanation as a programmer and manager of programmers for 50 years. Without actually reading the code of the apps I can’t tell you why they don’t work as you would like them to. I don’t insist that you accept my hypothesis, but I see no point in discussing this further with you. I suggest you contact the provider of those apps and ask them.
