Mac Mini M1 5.1 output issues

Hi my new Mac Mini M1 won’t output 5 channels properly. It’s connected to a Denon amp via HDMI and then the amp is HDMI to the tv.

When I use the Audio MIDI setup App I select the Denon as the output choose a 5 channel output. When I then press the speaker config tab I can only select stereo or quadraphonic, no option for 5.1. Also, when I test the 4 channels they send the audio to the wrong speakers.

In Audio Midi settings, is there an "encoded passthrough" option

in the menu. If so select that, assuming you are playing back sources

with some form of encoded audio and not multichannel PCM since

most movies and TV shows use some form of encoded multichannel audio.

I know in the past there was such an option on Minis and macOSes.

Also insure the player you are using is sending the encoded audio.

It’s not supported, unfortunately since your TV and your Denon aren’t compatible with the latest standards. If you’re happy with stereo, you can fix the speaker problem by swapping the cables at the back of your Denon. Otherwise, my recommendation is to use Apple TV 4K for all your 5:1 video-viewing needs. Good luck!
