It is a bit ridiculous that these can't be shared with family members or just shared like you share your location in Find My with friends.
I have a tag on our on dog, but my wife and my daughter can't track him. That's pretty sad. Do we need to add three AirTags on my dog's collar so we can all track him? LoL.
Come on guys this is something that needs to be added. It drives my wife crazy when we get into ANY of our vehicles as each has an Airtag for tracking and when it's not recognized the airtag beeps. So much for letting the bad guys know about it too! Need to tweak some of the features for when multiple people need to utilize the same airtag weather it's family or just sharing one. Then yes I get you don't want unauthorized tracking but when you have authorized on your own vehicle but still have the tag beep when it moves that alerts the bad guy and if they find it out the window it goes.
These are just some of the things that I feel need to be updated in the next update. So, when either of us get in any of our cars the apple device knows it's one of us and doesn't just arbitrarily start beeping. Hopefully, you can add these features in. Thx
I’m having the same problem with my AirTag on our dog. When my boyfriend takes my dog to his house he gets a message to tell him about the AirTag! I’m the one who has the AirTag as my ‘item’ on my phone and I don’t get pinged at all! So the ‘thief’ or person who has found the item with the AirTag on is warned but not the owner!
complete waste of money
Would be nice if Apple took all this feedback on board and is saying thank you we will be looking into your valuable customer feedback, instead of defending themselves and reminding us of their return policy!
I will say that in your instance is different....It is telling him that he has an item nearby that doesn't belong to him. By design, and in the product description, that is what they are supposed to do. I was referring to the fact that my wife can not open the app and actually track them.
In term of usage, that's ridiculous. I didn't even think it was not possible and bought it without a doubt.
In term of privacy, that's when Apple decided a family member should not track another. That's arguable.
Then a solution Apple : let it possible when we already share our position. Then, that's a no-brainer.
That's pretty brilliant. If you share your location, then the tracker should be active. I like that.
I guess many items I have though are shared between our family members. Such as shared keys, shared remote, shared DOG.
I wish Apple would update their AirTags so family sharing would work. I don't see what the privacy issue would be. If I am the one who registered the airtag, I should be able to share it with anyone in my family. If there is some issue that I am unaware of, then maybe set it up so my family members can opt in to accept what I shared with them.
The logic on privacy is a poorly thought out. As things stand now my wife cannot share my air tag...so the dog...wearing the airtag...triggers a warning on her phone all the time that an airtag is with her that is not hers. Ok...totally makes sense as we can't share it.
But here is the kicker...she was so annoyed by it that now she turned off the notifications. So now someone could stick one in her purse and she would not know.
all solved by her being able to share the AirTag...and opt out if she chooses not to.
All around just a fail on Apple's products people. Obviously a super minor inconsequential product to their business, but we expect apple to do things right. And this is not.
Me too! Apple, wake up, please. The entire benefit of these is that they don’t require access to WiFi, and don’t need to be recharged. I have a kid who never loses his phone (which we can all track), but leaves keys and backpack in various places. He and I need to be able to track that.
Apple needs to solve this ASAP. My wife and I travel a lot, but if she takes a suitcase that the tag is assigned to me the buzzer starts to go off, alerting her that she is being followed. This could be solved by sharing the tag. if you connect for a tag to follow you, then there shouldn't be privacy issues......
This is so disappointing that AirTags can’t be shared across a family the same as other apple devices. I urge Apple to add this feature to their backlog. I might have to go back to using Tile if they don’t implement this soon.
Yes, it’s clear $1 trillion is “not enough” for Apple, so we all have to either be content with the fact that they are pushing Apple fans to buy more single user Airtags, or…we can just switch to tile.com
Yes, please DO post “how.”
It would appler that the “Family Sharing” is via the Chipolo app (and Chipolo’s servers) vice iOS/Apple.
It would be interesting to know how the Chipolo architecture mentioned in link below ACTUALLY works to protect privacy and anonymity and how it prevents “tracing-back” to the identity of the relaying devices.
https://support.chipolo.net/hc/en-us/articles/209527125-How-To-Share-Your-Chipolo
Judging from this web site statement:
“ … As the Chipolo Community of users running the app grows, the more effective our community becomes in finding your lost item …”
It might applear that the shared “finding function” might not yet be as robust as Chipolo would like us to believe.
Hi Apple
The idea is great but not finished. You talk and develop tools for health. So Airtags can be useful for people with dementia, or better for their families. Bute therefore the tag or the location must be shareable.

What a big missed opportunity and disappointment, we are using this with all my family and evidently this is used for many shared family stuff that gets easily misplaced. It is great that we can find each other’s devices because we leave them all around the house, how Apple didn’t see this feature was critical for AirTag? Must have been a technical issue/challenge, I cannot see other way to miss such an obvious key feature for something like this.
