what is unknown error 7004

Trying to resolve an email issue when I discovered I received the message: an unknown error occurred (7004) when I tried to connect my iPad through my iMac's finder. Then I see that this same error happens when I try to connect my iPhone. Both IOS devices are up to date (v14.6) and my iMac is a new M1 model (1 week old tomorrow). Web search suggests a M1 problem. True?????

Eric-F,

I had just been trying to link my iOS devices to my iMac’s finder locations. I had also discovered that I ran into the same difficulty when I tried to connect to the Music app on iMac. The whole purpose of this was to try and discover why my iPad was not using the indicated default email address in the return address (my iMac and iPhone did show the default address). I have to assume that syncing my iPad with my iMac/iCloud was a first step towards the solution to the problem. The problems with linking my iOS devices became moot after the newly arrived OS update to v11.4, as everything connects, syncs, and backups successfully. I still have the problem with my iPad not using the indicated default email, but that’s a different issue :)

Hello DJMc,

It sounds as though you're getting unknown error (7004) when attempting connect your with your Mac. To clarify a bit further are you attempting to sync content to your iPhone from the Mac, or attempting to restore your device? If you're attempting to restore your iPhone try the steps outlines in the following article.

If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

If you're attempting to achieve a different task please let us know in more detail what steps you're taking prior to the error message appearing.

Have a great day!

Sharon_419,

A suggestion I received as I reached out for help as to why my iPad was not using the desired default email as the sending address suggested I check the settings in the finder location to see that I indeed was connected as I thought I was. It was this that caused me to discover that neither of my IOS devices were visible in the finder of my iMac due to this unknown error. That problem caused me to switch immediate concerns to fixing that error. It was solved when Apple introduced an update to its OS the day I was investigating.

Going back to the mail on iPad problem--Yes, I am signed in to the same apple account on all my devices.. I signed out, signed in on my iPad. Everything appears to have synced correctly, etc. I've checked many times that the default mail address is correct in my iPad preferences. I have done all the restarts, checks for updates, etc, yet the return email address just does not match the default email address, unless I am replying to an email sent to my default address. With a new message, it does match on my iMac, my iPhone and even my wife's MacBook when I log on using my apple account---just NOT on my iPad. I'm done trying to find a solution to a problem with no apparent solution (disappointing idea from Apple). Thank you fro your suggestions and consideration.

We're glad the device not being recognized in Finder has been resolved by an update DJMc.

In reference to your default email on the iPad it sounds like it's set correctly in Settings > Mail. Do you have multiple email accounts set up with the Mail app? If so, and you're replying to an email that you received, your response would be sent from that receiving email address. For example, if you have a Gmail account and iCloud email set up, and you're replying to an email that you received on the iCloud account, your reply would be sent from the iCloud email unless you change it to the Gmail account. If you're composing a new email (not a reply), that email would be sent from the default email account you have set in Settings > Mail.

If that is not the experience you're having in Mail, and with the steps you've completed thus far, it would be recommended to contact Apple. You can find their contact details online via the Get Support website.

Take care!

Thank you for those details DJMc,

It sounds as though your iPad is either signed in to a different Apple ID for the iTunes Store, App Store, and other Apple features. If so, this is managed directly through the iPad itself, not through the Finder or Music on your Mac. You can sign out of the current Apple ID, and back in to the correct Apple ID via Settings > [your name], then tap Sign Out. More information about signing in with your Apple ID can be found in the following article.

Sign in with your Apple ID

If you're wanting to sync specific content via iCloud such as Photos, Contacts, Notes, Reminders, and much more you can find some great information on all the iCloud features via the iCloud support website linked below.

If you're having a different issue such as with the Mail app, and wanting to set a default account that's used when sending emails. That setting can be changed in Settings > Mail in the iPad settings. If you're need further assistance please provide us with more detail about the result you're seeking to achieve.

Have a great day!
