Apple Watch BMW - starting the car

It seems almost unbelievable but BMW tells me that to start your BMW using your Apple Watch you have to take the watch off and put it in the ashtray on the NFC reader. There is no way to start the car while the watch is on your arm. Seems unbelievable the BMW engineers never thought of this use case - starting the car! Anyone figured out how to solve this problem?
