Apple Gift card is invalid

I was gifted a $50 Apple gift card and when I went to redeem it, it said that the number was invalid. On the receipt it says that it was activated and when I contacted Apple support, it took about an hour for them to just tell me that I have to go back to the retailer even though i cant return it. I don’t know what to do and it feels like I just lost $50.
