I changed my Apple ID password on the web and my iPhone received a text message saying "Your Apple ID code is: xxxxxx. Don't share it with anyone." xxxxxx is a 6-digit code. What is this code and when is it used? I can login to my devices with my passcode which is different from this Apple ID code. So what is it?

When you sign in to a new device for the first time, it will require both your password and that six-digit code. That's a great question but there is no reason you'll need it in the future. Whenever you need a verification code, the two-factor authentication system will generate a new one.
