Email has been compromised

Registered iPhone in Ghana with no USA info yet I am receiving info from USA. Does this mean iCloud server could easily be compromised?

Hi Ghanabusiness,

Thanks for posting your question in Apple Support Communities!

Could you please describe exactly what USA information you are receiving? The iCloud server is protected through Apple and is not easily compromised. If you have concerns about the security of your account you can find steps on how to secure it using this article: If you think your Apple ID has been compromised

Best Wishes.

Hey Ghanabusiness,

It is very likely that these emails are phishing emails. Usually if there are emails being sent stating that there is an issue with your personal data, data breach, or compromised account, and you do not have any connection with the sender, this would indicate a phishing scheme. You can find more information about phishing emails and how to report them by following this link: Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams.

Best Wishes.

I have received legitimate emails from the federal at @esd.wa.go regarding a data breach AND The State of Illinois at Illinois.gov stating my identity been compromised. Yet my mobile number and iCloud email registered in Ghana.

I have NEVER used this email regarding any matters in USA. And of course, the email hasn’t been used by another person previously nor does anyone have access to may email portal.

This is is very strange. And anxiously trying to figure out how it could happen.

Thanks,

Hi Less, I appreciate your input as well. The URLs in both of the emails are authentic which are Illinois.gov and esd.wa.gov

Do you think it’s feasible for those urls to be cloned? If so, that’s a scary thought how one could hijack a URL so easily. Seems feasible for someone doing it internally with access to the backend system to manipulate.

The message in the body of the email was obviously fake. My profession is trained to spot spoof emails. But this was a good trick because they used authentic urls.

Yet, for security measures I did report both emails to apple while this mystery remains.

Thanks,

Linda
