Providing your iPad was secured with a Passcode, both your data and AppleID will be secure and protected. You would, however, be well advised to change your AppleID password so as to further protect your account.

You should not need to close your AppleID account - in fact, if you intend to replace your lost device or have any other Apple devices, you would be unwise to do so. Keeping your AppleID account allows you to access your data stored in iCloud - including any iCloud backup, from which you can restore your data to a replacement device.

Additionally, your AppleID account is linked to Apps, Media, Services and Subscriptions (App and iTunes Stores) for which you have paid. Closing you AppleID account will permanently lose access to all paid content; this material cannot be transferred to a different AppleID account.
