Hi 69edwina,
Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities. Here to help.
We understand you are inquiring about cellular data usage while using Apple Maps. Happy to help with this.
Maps is a GPS service which does require some data in order to load location information. This usage should be fairly minimal however. You can disable cellular data for Maps and try to preload your navigation routes before leaving a Wi-Fi network, but this could lead to less accurate routing during navigation. If you take a look in Settings > Maps, there are a few settings that could be opted out of here without reducing navigation experience-- Air Quality Index and Weather. This information will still be accessible to you in the Weather app, but won't integrate into the Maps app.
We would suggest monitoring how much data the Maps app uses in the Cellular Data settings so you can get a feel for the impact this has compared to other apps and processes.
Check the cellular data usage on your iPhone and iPad
As a note, the cellular data usage tracker in settings does not track based on your career billing period. This is tracking usage over the lifespan of the device. If you want to get a better understanding of the data you use going forward, you can reset the statistics on this page which will reset the counter with today as day one. Scroll to the bottom of Settings > Cellular and you will find 'Reset Statistics'
Hope this helps! Feel free to follow up to this message if we can provide any additional clarity. Take care for now.
