Always-on and digital clock showing up

Recently bought an Apple watch series 6 Nike version. Always-on is selected. Noticed that when using my different faces, watch correctly switches between all-lit and dimmed, depending on usage. However, also noticed that sometimes screen goes all dark and a white digital clock shows up on the top, right hand corner. Is that correct? Can I avoid that digital clock?

Could you be in Power Reserve mode? See the 'Use Power Reserve' section in:

The first (and simplest) thing to try if something isn’t working right is to restart your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. If necessary (device not responding), try a forced restart. Both methods can be found here:

If that doesn't help, the next steps would be to unpair and pair your watch again and restore from the backup just created. This should result in no loss of data. It deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.
