Time Machine backup fails

When the system starts to activate the standby mode, Time Machine fails to create backups on the external drive. It seems to me, that the backupd fails to copy some files and it is never the same file/directory.

System Environment:

  • Western Digital 3TB drive;
  • formatted a few days ago in APFS (upper/lower) Encryption
  • three years old drive
  • Name TM_Backup_2021

For example the backup fails for first time at 15:41:14ff

Then I turned off the power supply of the external drive and turned it on again. The Mac activated the volume and I was capable to perform a backup with Time Machine again.

What is the problem with Time Machine and the external drive?

Shouldn't I use APFS?

Thx

Michael

After booting my Mac in standard mode, I was able to procedure/observe the problem again. Using EtreCheckPro, I was able to identify all software packages, which were operating in the background. The reason behind these installed software, was caused by the migration of the applications using TimeMachine.

I have removed all software packages which I will not use in the future.

Try a different drive and compare your results.

If the external drive is operating in a state of failure, it will continue to get nothing but worse.

I have been following the advice using a different drive before. My backup drives have been working correctly before I switched to the new M1. The mentioned drive TM_Backup_2021 has been erased and reformatted a few days ago and the problems still exist.

Could it be that the "old" WD MyBook Studio" drives are now incompatible with a USB-interface and M1 Mac?

Maybe is this also worth the effort to set up the system again?

A few hours ago I have booted by mac in safe mode. My Mac has been several times for several hours in standby mode. Until now the problem has not occurred again. That is a good situation for the hardware.

Now I need to find the 3rd party software which is causing the problem. Any suggestions how to proceed?

Thx
