Is it safe and useful to install MalwareBytes on my MacBook Pro, 15" Mid 2015 Retina, running latest OS Big Sur?

Yes. Many participants here use MalwareBytes. I would try the free version.

Any thoughts on including it in my sys. prefs login items?

Just run it manually when you want to check for malware. Do not run it automatically. No need to have it use system resources when not needed.
