Does the Watch SE ‘Gold’ case match the ‘Gold’ stainless steel band?

This is correct. I recently purchased a "gold" Watch V6 that came with a pink sport band and also purchased the "gold" melanese band and they DO NOT MATCH. In fact they look awful together! I returned the band immediately.

I then purchased a band through Amazon for $18.00 that matches perfectly.

PLEASE APPLE -- MAKE A MELANESE BAND THAT MATCHES THE "GOLD" VERSION 6 WATCH.

I think you are right - that gold tone match is clearly more exact with the S6. Check here for instance:
