Person deleted iMessage texts from their phone and it disappeared on mine?

I had a year long worth of texts(iMessages) with a friend. The other day they deleted the whole conversation on their phone and it disappeared on my phone too even though I did not delete them.

My iPhone has not been backed up for a little longer than a year. Is this why it got deleted on my end as well?? Very confused and I can’t find anything on the internet to explain this. I thought even if someone else deleted texts on their phone, the other phone would still have the conversation....if someone could answer this it would be much appreciated. Nobody knows my passcode so it’s impossible that anyone could have deleted it on my phone other than me, which I didn’t.

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Yes. You were sharing an iCloud account and undoubtedly using messages in iCloud. That means when you delete them in one place, they are deleted everywhere that's signed into that account.

You need to stop sharing an account right now!

Okay, so I did confirm that I was logged into my email on this persons Apple laptop which is the same email address connected to my Apple ID (the password for my email is different than for Apple though). The messages were in iCloud meaning they translate to all devices connected with the phone. So does that make sense that they got deleted on my side too because somehow the email address was connected to their laptop and my phone/my friends phone?
