M1 iPad 12.9 inch 256GB 8GB RAM WiFi Battery Drain?

I got my M1 iPad 12.9 inch 256GB 8GB RAM WiFi a few days ago.

It seems like my battery is draining too fast.

Today I spent 100 minutes of basic tasks (YouTube, Apple Mail and Safari) and the battery dropped 30% from a full charge!!!

This means that the battery life will be 5.5 hours which is nowhere near the advertised up to 10 hours.

For context I am using the Apple Magic Keyboard, The Apple Pencil is magnetically staying on top and I have Auto Brightness.

I read the reason might be indexing (as I am migrating from a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 inch) but today is the 4th day I am using this brand new machine.

Has someone else had battery drain problems?

Any ideas for a solution?

5-6 hours battery life for basic tasks is too low.

Thanks!

As described, the battery utilisation does appear to be higher than perhaps should be expected. A forced-restart of your iPad might be helpful - as doing so will often resolve a runaway process:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If the problem persists, you might be well advised to seek assistance from Apple Support. You will find the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can open a support case using the excellent Apple Support App:

My iPad fixed itself lol

I did NOT do anything and after 5-7 days I am getting 8-10 hours of battery life.

No change in usage

Auto Brightness

Magic Keyboard

Apple Pencil Docked

Maybe the reason was the transfer from an older iPad and in addition some processes happening in the background. I do not really know but I am happy my problem fixed itself.

I have exactly the same issue. For the last two to three weeks my M1 iPad has been almost useless. It can easily drain more than 50% over night. I have turned off all automatic updating etc. but the drain is still massive. I need to charge the iPad ever day.

In the daytime I only use the iPad for emails, note taking and a bit of browsing. Nothing that should require a lot of power to perform.

Any suggestions how to solve the issue?

NB: I have tried to restart the iPad several times, but it doesn’t solve the problem.

Me too.

I saw a YouTube video where the Apple M1 chip outperforms the best Intel and AMD chips, they put them through many stress tests, and it consumed less power too. Having said that, it was probably over-kill for the new iPad tablet. Previous models of the iPad ran plenty fast, I cannot tell the difference.

Just got the iPhone 13 Pro Max, it has unbelievable good battery life. A flawless phone for year 2021.

Only 5.5 hours on the iPad is not a big deal for me, as at home it is always plugged it, and I would only use the battery travelling on a plane or train. But if you were a student attending school or university all day, this would be a big issue.
