my air pods wont connect to my macbook air
I am not able to get my Gen1 airpods to connect to my macbook air.

You've posted this in the macOS High Sierra community. Is this in fact the macOS you are using?
Use AirPods with your Mac - Apple Support
Have you previously paired the AirPods with another computer or device?
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the MacBook Air: go to System Preferences > Bluetooth.
