Facetime sound output is really low on my macbook

I have multiple apple devices and I use facetime across all of them. I understand how it is to hear sound on max volume across all my devices. On facetime calls on my iphones and ipads the sound output is good and is as expected when I increase/decrease the volume.

When it comes to my macbooks(one running big sur and one catalina) the factime sound output is insanely low.

For comparison: I play the same song at max volume on my iphone and my macbook. I can hear the iphone in the adjacent room and the macbook can be heard across the house.

The factime call on my macbooks on max volume is about equal to 25% on my iphone.

Another observation was the experience of using airpods on facetime and listening to music across all devices was the exact same.

What is going on?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.4
