Go to Settings/General and scroll to the bottom. Look directly below VPN. Do you see Profiles? If not, your analysis is correct. If you see Profiles open it and see if there is a beta profile. If there is, tap on it and delete it, then restart your phone.
Yes, there is a problem on Apple’s end that is affecting some phones, but so far it has only affected people who have a version of iOS 14. If this is the very first time you have tried to update to a version that was released 8 months ago then it could be a problem on Apple’s end. But if you have tried at any time outside of the past 3 hours then Apple’s update server problem is not the cause. And it it is Apple’s update server problem the only thing you can do is wait for them to fix it on their end.
If you have had the problem in the past you may also have an uninstalled download of an iOS update. Go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage and look for it. If you find it delete it.

Remove the beta profile. If there isn't one, check that it can properly communicate with Apple's servers.

Instead of giving the same response try and determine the problem. A lot of people are not able to upgrade right now, myself included. Therefore the logical problem would be with Apple not with a beta profile.
