  • Apple TV 4K (A1842 or A2169), will offer to output in 4K resolution, if it detects that capability on the screen. If 4K is not available in Settings, then that capability is not detected.
  • You need a 4K TV with the Apple TV connected to a HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 or better port that support 4K. Some TVs must have their HDMI ports configured for high bandwidth/“Enhanced” use. Some TVs have a few HDMI ports of a lesser standard (e.g. HDMI 1.4).
  • You will need 4K content, app content marked as 4K.
  • If you have any devices in between (AV receiver, splitter, extractor, switch), then that must also support 4K/HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2.
  • 4:4:4 chroma may prevent other video properties. Best to set 4:2:0, to allow for 4K, HDR, 50/60 Hz. Streaming video is 4:2:0 anyway, so you won’t lose quality.
