I don't think I have apple music installed on my mac. How can I see if it's installed? If I install, how will it effect the use of my iPod Classic? How would I sync the two without losing any songs from either?

What version of macOS does your Mac have? Mojave or earlier run iTunes, Catalina or later run Music, TV, Podcasts, etc. See What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support. There is no standalone installer for older builds of macOS.
