Apple Watch - storage full

Storage is full. 0 apps, 0 pics, 0 songs. I’ve tried unpairing and resetting and something. It Just fills it up on its own within a couple of days. I suspect this is a WatchOS BUG. Because of not being able to use Apps or songs or images - I’m stuck with basic watch functionality which makes it a pretty useless device now - this has only started happening (as far as I can tell) since the last WatchOS update

By hidden baggage I meant all kinds of system files that get stored away over the years and are not showing up under Usage and are not under your direct control. It would be nice if there was a 'system cleanup' option available for all that.

Here the steps I was thinking of:

  • Create a new Apple ID
  • Unpair your watch from your iPhone
  • Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone
  • Sign in to iCloud on your iPhone, using your new Apple ID
  • Pair the watch with your iPhone, setting it up as new. During that process, you will need to sign in with your normal Apple ID to remove the activation lock.

To go back to your actual setup, you would need to repeat the steps again. During re-pair you can pick up the backup that was automatically taken during the first unpair.

thanks. What do you mean by hidden baggage?

Also, what’s involved in using a different Apple ID with the watch - I assume that the Apple ID therefore can be different to the one on the phone it is sync’d with, as it would be an unworkable solution if it isn’t - as all much “stuff” is associated with my Apple ID (bank cards, password syncing via iChain etc), so changing my Apple ID is not really a solution.

Thanks for the info on “baggage”.

in terms of trying a a different Apple ID that’s just a way too much effort as it involves signing out of my phone, and at the end, it’s only a test and I wouldn’t be able to stay with that “new” Apple ID. It would take several hours and I don’t want to mess with my phone - I know how painful signing out of my Apple IF on my phone is and resyncing all my emails, texts and apps again takes hours.

I guess I’ll just have to put up with this BUG.

my wife’s watch has the same exact issue. We both bought watches in February (latest version) and after also updating phones her watch started getting storage full alerts and was unable to use any other apps since first week of June. Support through chat/online told us it’s a known bug and we have to wait for apple to fix bug through OS updates. They said sorry but there’s nothing we can do. Warranty doesn’t cover because it’s software not hardware issue. We took it in store and they told us the same. Hardware is working ok and had us do an additional call only to be told by a supervisor “it’s a known bug” and there’s nothing they can do. All we can do is wait for apple to release an update that will fix this known bug. So $300 watch that can only tell time and do nothing else. My watch doesn’t have the same issue but my wife’s is a paper weight now. I’ve seen messages in forums going back a year and a half for this same issue.
