I tried reinstall for an old MacBook Air. The problem is that it will only allows me to reinstall Yosemite, which is what the laptop was running before I wiped the disk. The problem is, Yosemite is no longer available and I cannot update. Do I reinstall Catalina (or more modern system) through the Reinstall function?

Reinstall Yosemite on the laptop using the recovery startup (hold down ⌘-R when restarting).
When finished with that, visit the page link below to download the macOS updater (El Capitan, SIerra or High Sierra) that is appropriate for your MacBook Air.

We tried that but the installer said Yosemite download was not available. We also tried to upgrade to Catalina first via the app store, but we only get internal server error 500 messages (I am writing this by memory).
