using older model chargers with iPhone 12

I just upgraded to a 12 MINI, sales person told me to only charge the phone with a USB-C adapter (had to purchase separately) or a wireless charger. Chargers from older model iPhones will damage the battery. This doesn't sound reasonable

In addition to some of the comments made earlier, I think if it would damage your battery then Apple wouldn't say this in their documentation:

About Apple USB power adapters

https://support.apple.com/HT210133

"You can use any of the adapters listed below to charge your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or iPod. You can also use third-party adapters that comply with applicable safety standards."

That list includes even a quite old model 5W charger. The main difference is a 5W charger will take longer to charge an iPad for which a 20W charger was supplied.
