How Does Time Machine Behave?

(1) If Time Machine creates back-ups on an external hardware for general use, will it eventually steal space by overwriting my personal files I want to keep? (2a) Also, can Time Machine be controlled manually? (What if I don't want daily back-ups, for example?) and/or (2b) can I set up a schedule to run back-ups overnight? (3) Last, if my internal hard drive crashes, how easy is it to revert to the last saved back-up file?

Time Machine's "claim to fame" is that it is the backup that gets done, because it does not ruin performance of the rest of the computer while doing its backup operations. You do not have to set aside a "Special Time" when you only do backups. When you need it, your Time machine Backup is much more likely to be there. Time machine will work quietly and automatically in the background, without interrupting your regular work, and only save the incremental changes.
