I have been trying to securely erase an external FW800 HD prior to decommissioning. It starts but seems to hang. I have performed a 7 level erase before and know it takes a LONG time. I waited 3 days and the progress bar never moved.
Suggestions?

How about waiting another 3 days (?)
If it is mission critical, a hammer has always worked well against mechanical hard drive platters.

How large is the offending drive??
Maybe apply FileVault to it and then erase it.
Or maybe write it full with unimportant data and then erase it.
How much $ are you asking for it -- I have physically destroyed a few el cheapo SCSI and ATA drives and retrieved the magnets for fun.
