AirPrint from iPhone to Brother Label printer

Hello all,

I have a Brother QL-710w label printer that I would like to use in an area where there is no network. Actually it is a shared network where it's not allowed "Peer to peer".

Would anyone know if there is a way to create an Ad-hock wifi to connect my printer to my phone?

Greatly appreciate.

Hi,

The Brother QL-710w supports AirPrint and Wi-Fi Direct.

AirPrint can be used with an iPhone, providing that an AirPrint-enabled printer (About AirPrint - Apple Support) and the iPhone are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). AirPrint relies on Bonjour/mDNS to discover devices. The idea is to print without having to install apps or enter network data (such as IP addresses).

Wi-Fi Direct is a direct connection method without the use of a router. Since this is not AirPrint, direct printing to this printer from an iPhone, if at all possible, would require a special app. You may want to check details with the printer manufacturer. Could one of the apps (maybe something like iPrint&Label) at https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=lpql710weus&os=10004 be used?

An alternative solution could perhaps be to use a simple Wi-Fi travel router in order to create a local Wi-Fi network for the purpose of printing from the iPhone only. If so, AirPrint printing would work.

Hello,

It should be possible to build an access point/hotspot/router using a Raspberry Pi (Zero W, or another model). You can find descriptions on the Internet. However, it will also take some time to set it up.

It may be easier to look for a travel router (perhaps something similar to a TP-Link TL-WR802N). Please note that you do not need a mobile broadband router. The interesting part is the local Wi-Fi network.

The most cost-effective solution is probably to look for an old (normal) Wi-Fi router in a thrift shop or via an online auction site. That way, you may be able to get a working local Wi-Fi network for as little as five or ten USD.
