removing old apple ID from FaceTime on mac

FaceTime on my Mac keeps defaulting to an old unused Apple ID and won't let me use my new Apple ID. How do I rectify this? The old Apple ID is no longer active, but I am continuously asked for a password.

Thanks for your response. It seems I had a rare problem where the old ID was not deleted from my hard drive/OS despite me updating to a new ID and running the latest OS. I ended up ringing Apple support and have had to return my Mac to factory settings, reinstall the OS and reinstall all my files manually.

Still in the process of above, but seems to have fixed the issue

Hello hazelsmum! Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that FaceTime is asking you for the password to an old Apple ID. We'd like to look into this with you to see how we can help.

Is the old Apple ID signed in anywhere on your Mac, for example, FaceTime, Messages, iCloud, Mac App Store? Make sure the old Apple ID has been replaced with the updated one in each of these apps and services.
