Cannot input　Japanese　after　upgrade　to Catalina

I　have　resisted upgrading to Catalina because it　breaks　a number　of　programs　that I use　frequently. I found replacements for these and decided　to　upgrade　from Mohave.　Everything　seems　to work　fine except for the fact that　I　cannot　input　Japanese at all　and with Chinese, I can only input the　first character on a line.　I　have the proper　languages and　inputs set　in　System Preferences; I tried booting　in Safe Mode; I　tried deleting the inputs and reselecting them. All to no avail. Any ideas　about how to fix　this?

You should probably try reinstalling the OS.

I forgot to add that I checked and all the required fonts are present and these languages display properly. I tried setting the font in Word and TextEdit to a Japanese font but this did not work either.

but just get "niho" ?

Does this happen in all apps, including Mail, Notes, Safari, Pages, Message, TextEdit?

Yes it does. Also in Spotlight and and non-Apple programs such as MSWord and the like.

I have not heard of others with your problem (my own Catalina works fine with those input sources). What happens exactly when you try to input Japanese via the Hiragana input source?

Exactly. However, in inputting Chinese pinyin, the selection of characters for that syllable appears for the first input on the line but no others until the next line.
