my iphone set itself to 1/2/1970

I keep a secondary iPhone and it lost it's charge and when I went to charge and start it up yesterday it has the date set as Friday 1/2/1970.

I am aware that there was a hoax 5 years back telling people to set their phone dates to 1/1/1970 for a retro Easter egg or something and that doing so would 'brick' or keep the phone in an endless boot loop but I did not do anything to change the date. Anyone else have this issue ?

My iPhone 12 is fine/ is Apple doing this to force people to upgrade ? jk/no I'm not
