I backup with Time Machine using an external hard drive. I recently changed hard drives, using a 5 TB instead of the 4 TB I had been using. How do I transfer the backups from the old to the new?

Don't try to do this in the Finder - there are so many files it's likely never to finish. Your best method - I did this once- is to use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the old disk to the new one. However if you've already started making backups on the new disk I'm not sure this will work: it's best to do the cloning onto a newly formatted disk so that TM will think it's the same disk.
I tried this recently and it would not work for some reason. I believe it had something to do with external disc to external disc that CCC did not like. I had to use the Finder process which did work.
