iPhone 12 Pro Max Overheating

I just received my 12 ProMax yesterday and completed setup. When I use an Apple lightning cable to connect the phone to my car's USB port (2019 Ford Explorer) in order to use Apple CarPlay, the phone very quickly heats up and is almost too hot to touch within about 10 minutes of being connected. Is this normal? Is there another way to connect to Apple CarPlay without overheating the phone?

The ambient temperature of the car is a normal/cool temperature (approx 70 degrees F). I have not left the phone in direct sunlight.
