Confusion over "LG UltraFine 4k" displays
This isn't so much a question as a warning to others who might get into the same confusion as I did. (And also: a request for someone at Apple's web-design team to modify some language on a specific webpage).
I was in the market for an external monitor for my M1 Macbook Air, finally admitting that I need to improve my ergonomic setup. I was at the Genius Bar for a different issue, and asked the rep what external monitor he'd recommend. He immediately said: the LG UltraFine display, because it allowed for integration with MacOS (including Night Shift, which is important to me, as I suffer from post-concussion syndrome). In Canada, however, the Apple Store no longer sells these displays. So I went online and did some research on LG's UltraFine 4K lineup, and ultimately decided to purchase the 27" LG UltraFine UHD (i.e. 4k) with ergo stand.
However, I later found out that when Apple says that the "LG UltraFine 4k" display is compatible with MacOS (and features such as Night Shift), what they're REALLY referring to is a very specific model (24MD4KL), which they designed in collaboration with LG.
The confusion rests here: LG has an entire line of UltraFine 4k models—so Apple's branding decision to simply call 24MD4KL "LG UltraFine 4k" is potentially very confusing for consumers. In my case, it means that I may have to go through the potential risks of returning a rather expensive monitor, because it doesn't have the compatibility that I was looking for—and that Apple's website very-much-seemed to suggest that it did.
This is really sloppy use of language by Apple / not really fair to its loyal customers.
