iPhone 8+ incoming call voice volume

my friend has an iPhone 8 Plus and can't hear incoming callers volume--not the ringer but caller's voice volume--we have gone to Settings->Sounds & Haptics and adjusted ringer volume and selected "change with buttons"--with ringer volume ¾ up still hear ringer but not incoming caller volume

You have to be in an active call to be able to adjust the volume in a phone call. You cannot change that when not in a call. You also may wish to check the earpiece and see if there is any dirt, debris or other things blocking that screen area that may be blocking it. If you change the Audio to speaker, are you able to hear the caller?
