The iPhoto application needed to be v9.6.1 to even work on macOS Yosemite (10.10.*), and there is no update from Apple available from earlier versions of iPhoto. It is a 32-bit application that Apple has retired and replaced with Photos beginning with macOS 10.10.3.
You can migrate your iPhoto Library by pressing the option key and launching the Photos application. If present, the iPhoto library will be detected and you select that for the migration.
