Is It Possible to use Passcode instead of Face ID for Face ID enabled apps

Hello,

So I have an iPhone XR and desperately miss Touch ID from my 6s. It worked amazing, especially for Touch ID enabled apps. I have many apps I log into, each with a different password. Since moving to my XR, I now have Face ID. I've tried setting it up multiple times and it rarely recognizes my face. So I've disabled it for logging into my phone as typing my passcode is much faster and less frustrating than having to pick up my phone each time I want to use it, have it face me, have Face ID fail, wait, try again, fail then give me the passcode screen anyway.

As mentioned, I have a lot of apps that, back when I had Touch ID, would just let me in. Touch ID just worked. I've noticed that I have 1 app that, when it launches, askes me for my passcode to log in instead of trying Face ID. This is perfect and I'm wondering how I can set that up for all of my Face ID enabled apps. Instead of having to remember each password across all of my apps, I'd love to just use my passcode. But right now it seems like it's Face ID or password. Passcode should be an option no? I mean, it's not less secure. If someone knew my passcode, they could just setup Face ID for themselves on my device and get into all my apps anyway if Face ID actually worked for them.

I can't seem to find the option and would love to set up my phone to just use my passcode instead of Face ID in Face ID enabled apps.

Please let me know if this is possible and if so, how to do it.

Greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What you want doesn't exist. Each app which you have set up Face ID to use has an option in settings to use Face ID or don't use Face ID. For example, my Chase Credit App settings will let me use Face ID to enter the App - OR - if I don't want to use Face ID, I would need to enter my user name and password for my Chase account. It does not offer the option to use my iPhone passcode and that has nothing to do with Apple. The App developer determines what is acceptable in terms of accessing their app and what credentials are required.

So, you either use Face ID or whatever the settings for each app offers you as an alternative. In most situations, I would suggest you provide feedback to Apple for feature requests. In this case that would be total waste of time. Apple doesn't own 3rd party apps and cannot in anyway influence how you sign into them. You'd need to contact each App Developer and provide that suggestion. But it's virtually guaranteed they won't implement anything like this. The Passcode you use on your phone is to open your phone and has nothing to do with individual apps, especially 3rd party apps.

Maybe you'd be better off buying an iPhone SE 2020. That is the last iPhone Apple sells with Touch ID in the current world.

You can go into settings > find the app in question that you want to disable Face ID for > turn off Face ID for the app in question it will be a green toggle switch. You can also go into settings > Face ID > other apps to see what apps you are using Face ID with. Follow the resource below for exact steps.

OK....I'm not going to argue with you on this. But they would have access to your passcode. And your face is of little value to any 3rd party, so it's much safer than a passcode. What you don't understand is how much importance Apple places on security. Everything inside the Apple ecosystem is a walled garden. Apple does not know your passcode. If you forget your passcode, the only way back into your phone is to completely erase it and that requires you know your Apple ID and Apple ID Password. To contrast, things outside the Apple ecosystem (3rd party apps) are outside the control of Apple. Apple would most assuredly never let 3rd party apps have access to your passcode. Nor should you ever want them to have access to it.

Your assertion that the Apps would be validated by Apple by you entering your passcode also isn't a good option. If I was an App Developer, I would NOT turn over entry control to my app, like a banking app, to Apple to validate. Facial recognition is completely different than a passcode. Just as your finger print is different on Touch ID.

Feel free to do as you want and provide the suggestion to Apple. But you'll never get what you're looking for, so you'd be better off finding a solution which is actually available to you now.

That's not really what I'm looking for. I know how to disable Face ID. I've turned it off already. What I'm looking for, is there a way for all Face ID enabled apps to use my passcode instead? Not a password, like "the" password for each app I'm logging into, just the passcode for logging into my phone. So, if had 2 apps, app one with Password1 and app two with Password2, a six digit pin for my phone, say 123456, and then Face ID. Instead of Face ID, my phone would prompt for passcode 123456 instead of Face ID.... fail.... Use Password, Password1 or Password2 respectively.

Does that make more sense? I might not be saying what I want to correctly.

Thanks for your input. That's helpful. It does seem odd that it wouldn't be a feature as it's not like it's any less secure. If I knew your passcode, I could just overwrite your Face ID and log in as you anyway, that's why I figured it was a feature.

Okay, thanks for your input. Another Apple disappointment. However, I'll look into the SE 2020. I totally miss my Touch ID from my 6s as that just worked.

Thanks again!

Yea, I'm not saying to take it away. If it works, great. It just fails constantly with me and I've tried setting it up like 30 times now. It's far less frustrating to use my passcode then to watch the thing fail over and over and then ask me for my passcode or password (if I'm in an app) so I've turned it off. However instead of trying to remember a million passwords, I was hoping to just use my passcode as it's no less secure and I have one app that uses it over Face ID so I know it's possible.

It's good, I'm sending a note to Apple right now actually about this potential feature as I know it would make my life much easier. Doubt they'll listen to little old me but never know unless you try. :)

Thanks again.

They wouldn't have access to my passcode. By that notion, you're implying that they have access to my Face ID profile as well. I've done a lot of reading on that and all they have access to is the end result, a true or false, did Face ID authenticate me or not. That's what this feature would be as well. Apple validates that I entered the correct passcode on the device and returns a true or false identically as Face ID does. No app manufactures would have any clue what validated there request, just that the answer was true or false. What you said about my passcode is exactly how I understand Face ID to work, Apple doesn't have access to it and is only contained within my phone in the "secure enclave" or whatever it's called. The app that uses my passcode right now is Microsoft Authenticator and I never once set it up with the app nor Microsoft themselves. However when I enter my passcode, it authenticates me through the standard Passcode prompt. No password nor Face ID required. So that's why I said, the feature exists, I just want it global, like Face ID. Like you I'd never want a 3rd party to have access to my passcode (nor my Face ID profile).

I understand where you're coming from. But it's simply not the same. What if someone looked over your shoulder and saw you enter your passcode to open your banking app? Then they somehow manage to get ahold of your phone. They could transfer all the money you have in the bank to themselves with just your iPhone passcode. But they don't have your face. They cannot open your phone or your banking app with their face. So your face is far more secure. And since Face ID, uses a True Depth camera and millions of computational readings were used to compute the exact dimensions of your face, they can't even use a photograph of you to open your phone or any apps. Trying to relate Face ID to the same level of security to your passcode for apps just isn't the same or nearly secure enough.

Again, it's pretty much guaranteed Apple will not, actually more importantly CANNOT grant your wish. Apple, as I mentioned does not control access to 3rd party apps. Apple doesn't own the App, its software or its functionality. You need to take sign in options up with the App Developer. But I do want to ask you a question. Since your iPhone Passcode is used only on your phone to open your phone, is NOT known by Apple, but is only contained on your phone, do you really want 3rd parties to have access to your iPhone Passcode? I certainly DON'T want any 3rd parties to have access to my iPhone Passcode.

I get what you want, but your honestly barking up the wrong tree in terms of asking Apple to do something about this.

That's okay, don't need to argue, I wasn't trying to start anything. Just looking for solutions.

This was the data I was going off of. If I'm wrong about it, I'm wrong. I'll just post it here for clarification as to where I was coming from and my thought process.

I appreciate your time; thank you.

Face ID and Apps

Within supported apps, you can enable Face ID for authentication. Apps are notified only as to whether the authentication is successful. Apps can’t access Face ID data associated with the enrolled face.
