To remove icons from your menubar press and hold the Command key down while clicking and dragging

the icon downwards away from the menubar.

Or quit and uninstall the app the icon is for.

Open the preferences for the app and see if there is an option to display or not display th icon in your menubar.

Some applications will only remove their menubar item if you remove the /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ program while booted in safe mode (with the shift key). Keep in mind since other critical menu items are there, a clone backup* of your system is recommended before tampering with that folder using the Go menu.

http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete.html will remove with applications their menu items.
