OS 3.0 on 1st gen touch

It is possible to use OS 3.0 (3.1 or whatever) on a 1st generation touch, right? Well when I have it plugged into itunes, it says that my software version (2.2) is the most up to date version. Is there a way to get 3.1 even though it says I cant?
