safari won't open with big sur OS after crash 2 days ago

My iMac 2017 HD, crashed on me 2 days ago, and when I rebooted safari wouldn't load.

I checked to make sure updates were "up to date", and I even uninstalled the 2 most recent app's I had downloaded (adobe creative & cloud). I then re-installed MAC OS.. hoping it would correct itself (it didn't).

I moved all the files on the desktop into my drop box, hoping maybe the free space would fix the issue, but that's not helping.

I'm also seeing references to chinese crypto.. and I'm not sure if that's an "new feature" but I actually haven't dabbled in crypto (yet).

Needless to say, I'm use to PC's , so this MAC thing is confusing at times. How do I get this darn browser to work again?!

  1. Hold the shift key down and launch Safari to test.
  2. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204098
  3. If this doesn’t help:

Download EtreCheck: https://etrecheck.com/  and post the report here.

Click, “Free Download” button and then  “Click to download” button,

open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar and select “Copy report”.

Click the “Page” button in the toolbar at the bottom of this page and paste it when you reply.

Note: This is a diagnostic test.

Thank you so much.

I have purchased a LaCie external portable HD, formatted it thru disk utility (bcs every time I tried to launch the "start here exe" it would attempt to open, but looked like it was trying to use safari (which isn't working).

Once I formatted that via disk utility, a prompt to use Time Machine popped up - so that's now running.

I believe everything I had on this IMac I've saved into my dropbox, but I may also try to backup to icloud as well (just in case).

Once time machine is complete, I will follow the steps to try and "repair" the Mac Disk... hopefully it works, and if it doesn't, then I suppose I'll have to bring it in.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.
